Birch serves more than 391 adults with major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, major depression and borderline personality disorder. Their severe symptoms and behaviors have generally limited their placement options. At Birch we call them "members"-because they are members of our Birch family and of the local communities in which they live.

The average age for Birch members is 38 years. Most began suffering from mental illness during their late teens and have faced enormous obstacles in life. Simple everyday activities and thought processes that were once taken for granted are now overwhelming because of their illnesses.

Yet, despite their severe disabilities, many Birch members have jobs, go to church, do volunteer work and participate in a wide variety of activities that keep them connected to the human community and improve the quality of their own lives.
