It is not uncommon for those with severe and persistent mental illness to occasionally experience an increase in symptoms that requires intensive treatment or hospitalization. Because it is the Mission of Birch Tree Communities, Inc. to facilitate a return to independent living and to prevent institutionalization or dependence, extensive measures are taken to prevent inpatient hospitalization when symptom acuity or significant regression occurs.

The Hope House provides a safe, secure and highly-supervised setting that facilitates a reduction in psychiatric symptoms.

The Hope House is a 16-bed crisis unit located on the grounds of the Arkansas Health Center. In addition to crisis intervention and stabilization, Hope House also provides the following services:

  • Case management,
  • Daily psychosocial rehabilitative program activities,
  • Extra support for members experiencing increased symptoms or deficits in functioning,
  • Crisis stabilization and prevention of hospitalization,
  • Short-term medical monitoring and nursing services for those recovering from medical procedures,
  • 24-hour nursing care,
  • Medication maintenance and supervision of medications,
  • Increased staff-to-member ratio,
  • Specialized staffing and treatment planning services,
  • Individual and group therapies, and<
  • Acute rehabilitative day treatment.

An environment that is highly supervised and secure facilitates a reduction in psychiatric symptoms. Ensuring the welfare of the individual as well as other members aids the recovery process. Extra support, services, supervision and structure enables members in crisis to experience stabilization, a return to baseline functioning, and a return to their home environment. When necessary, Hope House also provides screening and assessment for hospitalization.

While at the Hope House, treatment targets those symptoms that are the most acute, those that interfere with baseline performance or recovery, and those that place the member or others at risk. Once stabilization occurs, the member is able to return to the home environment.
