FAMILY DAY WRAP UP
Nothing excites us more than seeing family and friends join together for a day of family celebration! On October
10th more than 250 Birch Tree members and their family came together at Mary Kennley Park in Benton for a day of food,
fellowship and fun during our Annual Family Day celebration. Although the weather was a little cold and cloudy, folks
still enjoyed many great activities including a fishing contest, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, a blowup castle for
the kids, balloons, and other activities. We want to thank Brian Mullen for the great live music, Smith-Caldwell for
donating many items we gave away throughout the day, Smokey Joes Bar-B-Que and Ben E. Keith for the donation for all
the trimmings. It was a truly special day having family travel from all over the region to spend valuable, loving time
with our members. We hope to see everyone again next year and encourage all family members to become active in the lives
of their loved ones.
Volunteerism throughout the state
Clarksville: in February members set up and participated in a sponsored walk at a local fitness center.
Over 30 of our members and staff participated in walking well over a hundred miles raising $700 for the
American Cancer Society. The Clarksville branch also travels weekly to a local coffee shop for socialization
groups. Since introducing this resource to our members they have started to use it in there own time and they
report to us that they are mixing with members of the community while they are there. Three times a week we
take an outing to our local fitness center to walk and play basketball; many of the members have started to
initiate games of basketball with folks in the community. Also in February we took a trip to a retreat center
in the Ozark Mountains for a wonderful weekend. Members were able to relax, eat some good food, play games
and enjoy a very large warm fire to fellowship around.
First Ever Birch Tree Golf Tournament a Scores Big!
Summers heat and despair unclenched her miserable grip to allow 16 teams of golfers a beautiful day to celebrate the First
Ever Birch Tree Golf Tournament held at Longhills Golf Club on July 17th. With temps in the 80’s and the course in perfect
conditions, members, staff and folks from the community enjoyed a picture perfect day of golf, food and fellowship.
Although there was not a winner on our $20,000 hole in one contest, several people walked away with prizes such as a new
Cleveland putter in the Dizzy’s Grill and Bistro Putt-off, a Cleveland wedge in the longest drive, dozens of balls for
closest to pin and $50 in gift certificates from Dizzy’s Grill.
In one afternoon we were able to raise close to $4,000 through sponsorships, contests and registrations. Every penny will
go directly into the Member Dental Fund which helps support the dental needs for the members of Birch Tree. For the First
Ever Birch Tree Tournament we are calling it a huge success. Plans are in motion for next year and if you are interested
in sponsoring the event, please give us a call.
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors for making this event such a success; Smith-Caldwell Pharmacy, Goheen Legal Services,
Scott Family Dentistry, Dizzy’s Grill and Bistro, Cleo’s Furniture, Martin Shoe Repair, Ben E. Keith, Summit Bank,
Whitley Floor Covering, Watson Wireless, Edwin Watts Golf, and Roberson Insurance.
EXPRESSIONS Art Show and Sale an Overwhelming Success
The Arkansas Governors Mansion was the site of a wonderful event April 30th as over 400 people converged for an evening
of art, entertainment and fellowship. The 7th Annual EXPRESSIONS Art Show and Sale began with the Governor Mike Beebe,
First Lady Ginger Beebe, Dr. Herman Harley and Clinical Director David Kuchinski greeting guests as they arrived to view
and purchase over 260 original paintings created by Birch artists in the Expressive Arts Program. The Grand Hall filled
quickly as hundreds of guests admired and purchased close to $30,000 work of art with all of the profit from the selling
of the works going directly back to the artists. Music filled the air as members and staff, also known as The Birch Boys,
played music that kept the crowd moving. KATV’s own Pamela Smith emceed the live auction with the featured piece selling
for $4000 dollars! The food prepared by the Governors personal staff was a hit. Overall, we could have not asked for a more
sensational evening.
